Welcome to Foodie Town!
My name is Murissa and I have been writing since I was little but it wasn't until after I returned from a study abroad program in Italy that my writing focus became about food and travel.
My name is Murissa and I have been writing since I was little but it wasn't until after I returned from a study abroad program in Italy that my writing focus became about food and travel… Actually, the trip seemed to rewire my entire thought process.
My new hobby was to eat, document and write about my travels, foods I tried and wine I drank. Once I returned from Italy in June of 2010 I immediately decided to start a website where I would post about my experiences. This website overtime morphed into what is now Foodietown.ca, but it began as a way to write, sometimes very personally, about my travel experiences at home and abroad.
You see, there was and is parallels in the food scenes and food values of the Okanagan wine region, my home, and that of Italy.
I noticed both locations valued the local and in season, farm to table, wine and good food. After I returned from Italy, the Okanagan was going through a sort of food scene renaissance. What would become our most iconic restaurants - RauDZ, Waterfront Wines and various winery restaurants - were just opening or establishing a foot hold within the Canadian food scene.
I didn’t really understand what was happening to the Okanagan at the time but now with the high demand to live here, the Vancouverites and Albertans flocking to make the move here, rising cost in housing prices, and the boom in food, wineries and craft breweries…well, you wouldn’t recognize it. The Okanagan has become a destination and a continuous source of inspiration, angst, excitement and disappointment all at the same time. I’ll get into this all in future posts. But this is how I began to think about where I live and travel all with an eye for food.
What you can expect…
Substack is kind of like how blogging used to be but even more. I like that. I love how it’s one spot to collect everything I do rather than you having to chase it all across various platforms.
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
On the website I often write about where to go, and you’ll find that here too, but I’ll also be spilling all the details like a friend who just got back from a trip bursting to tell you everything, the good, the bad & the ugly.
Travel
I am always planning a trip in my head. We’ll talk trip planning from beginning to end. How I use social media to help me plan, girl trips, family travel as well as some solo exploring - something many are too scared to do even in their own home town.
Food
New restaurants, trending recipes, food scenes across Canada and wherever I roam.
Wine & Beer
I am a huge wino and craft beer lover. We’ll be talking Canadian wine clubs, new breweries and what food I’m drinking with each.
