Oahu Island Self-Drive + Top foodie stops

Taryn is back from her Oahu honeymoon and was it an incredible 10 days of food and culture. But she also learned that November is a very rainy month and the weather systems travel FAST. One second it is torrential rain and then within the same hour the sun is clearing the clouds.
One of her favourite days is the island self-drive from Waikiki to up through the centre of the island and around. Watch the video to see what we mean and find her favourite 3 food stops on the way. This is realistic self-drive itinerary that anyone can duplicate and they’ve got some tips along the way.

We have been a few times and have our favourites foodie stops which include:
Roy’s Waikiki outdoor bar for the Pineapple Martini - this martini has sliced pineapple that sits in a vat of vodka, rum and Stoli vanilla for 5 days. It is potent but delicious and a taste of Hawaii. Make it for the holidays and feel the malika leki maka vibes!
Taryn discovered a new-to-us steak house while there. We’ve tried Wolfgang’s, Hy’s (the only location outside of Canada) But her new locally owned favourite is Aloha Steakhouse. It was one of the best bites of her honeymoon and they give these cute bibs as well.
Giovanni’s Shrimp truck is always a reliable go-to. Whenever we try other shrimp trucks or shacks we get disappointed and wish we hand’t strayed from the OG. You’ll see it in Taryn’s video.
As a nod to Anthony Bourdain, we like to visit two stops for nostalgia and good bites & a boozy cocktail.
Hula Dog (formerly Puka Dog) Since Bourdain’s visit the couple that founded Puka Dog split. One took the name to Kauai and the other now operates as Hula Dog on Oahu. Bourdain loved the Hawaiian bun with a hollow centre perfect to fit sauces and relish before inserting the hot dog. Every bite has bun and hot dog!
La Mariana located on your way to or from the Oahu airport, we chose to visit on our way out with a late night flight at 6:00 pm. It’s it an old fashioned tiki bar overlooking yachts with a splendid view of the sunset. Live music is played, think sing-along classics like Sinatra or the Sound of Music and the drinks are delicious & strong. The only negative about this place is the service which can be painstakingly slow if it is busy.
